Genetic Testing

If you have ever tried a medication that did not work or caused an adverse reaction, it may be due to genetic incompatibility. Every single one of us has a unique set of DNA that, among many other things, determines how our bodies will react to medications. Technology has advanced to the point where genetic screenings can improve success rates in medications by matching individuals with drugs that they are most compatible with.

We Use The GeneSight Psychotropic Test

If you have struggled with medication, your genes may be a contributing factor. With the GeneSight test, your genetic makeup can provide clinicians with insight into how you may metabolize or respond to certain medications commonly prescribed to treat depression, anxiety, ADHD and other psychiatric conditions.
The GeneSight test must be ordered by your doctor or nurse practitioner.

Genetic Testing for Mental Health Medications

Drug-gene testing, also known as pharmacogenomics or pharmacogenetics, is the study of how an individual’s genes affect their body’s response to drugs. By conducting genetic testing for medications, it can help out in finding the right prescription for our patients.

A healthcare provider is critical as patients should never change prescription medications on their own. The GeneSight test is intended to supplement other information considered as part of a comprehensive medical assessment, like potential drug/drug interactions, age, weight, lifestyle, etc.

Genetic Testing at Valeo Behavorial Health

Valeo Behavioral Health has partnered with the industry leader in mental health medication gene testing. Genetic medication testing is a simple three-step process with results produced quickly.

  1. The patient is tested on-site at Valeo Behavioral Health. The test consists of a simple cheek swab to collect DNA.
  2. The test is shipped to the GeneSight lab for processing. Valeo Behavioral Health will take care of shipping. No shipping charges will apply.
  3. Valeo Behavioral Health receives, interprets, and reviews the test results with the patient. The average turnaround time for results is 24 to 72 hours from the time the GeneSight lab receives the completed test kit.

Genomind’s New York lab prides itself on quality assurance. They uniquely test every sample twice to ensure the highest level of accuracy. Therefore, you can rest assured you’re getting the best results.

Does my insurance cover Genetic Medication Testing?

The coverage of genetic medication testing for mental health is dependent on the patient’s specific insurance policy. More and more insurance companies are covering genetic testing, though some may have specific requirements or prerequisites around coverage of the test. Genesight can assist patients in determining out-of-pocket testing costs by working directly with the patient’s insurance company. Genesight will contact the patient directly to discuss the cost before processing the sample.

If the patient’s insurance company does not cover the cost of the test, the patient can opt to pay out-of-pocket.
